What is Linux, you ask? Great question!

Linux is an Operating System (OS) similar to Windows, with almost all the same features but faster, less cluttered, and more user-friendly.

What makes it different?

  • More secure: Linux requires password security to download new files and programs
  • Open-source: Linux isn’t owned by a brand like Microsoft or Apple, but rather is an open-source system, which means it’s created to allow users to use and modify the system in any way they see fit, so you aren’t tied to Windows or iOS.
  • Computer reboot: When you have an older computer or laptop, new software updates are often not able to be downloaded, but the current versions don’t work. With Linux, you can reboot old computers and laptops by downloading a different operating system to help it run!
  • The Terminal: Want more control over your user-interface? Linux allows you to edit the entirety of the OS through the “terminal.”

What is Linux Mint?

Linux Mint is a community-driven Linux distribution based on Ubuntu or Debian that strives to be a ‘modern, elegant and comfortable operating system which is both powerful and easy to use. Linux Mint provides full out-of-the-box multimedia support by including some proprietary software, such as multimedia codecs, and comes bundled with a variety of free and open-source applications.

This specific distribution is the “Cinnamon” edition. This is the most popular one, but there also exists the “Mate” and “Xfce” editions. If you’d like to change from “Cinnamon” to “Mate” or “Xfce” please let me know.

What is a LIVE USB?

'

A live USB is a bootable usb drive that contains an operating system that can be used without being installed. Essentially, you can stick this usb into any computer/laptop that can boot from a usb drive and you'll be able to load this operating system without having to install anything.

Most Linux distributions give you the option to install the operating system on your hard drive if you'd like to, but it is not necessary.

Keep in mind that unless you install the OS, the USB will boot into a 'brand new' OS each time and none of your updates or settings will be saved. You can save files as long as you make sure to save it on a separate USB or hard drive.

This is useful in cases where you don't want to save any files/settings.

A good example is when you are using someone else's computer and you don't want to leave a trace.
