What is Linux, you ask? Great question!

Linux is an Operating System (OS) similar to Windows, with almost all the same features but faster, less cluttered, and more user-friendly.

What makes it different?

  • More secure: Linux requires password security to download new files and programs
  • Open-source: Linux isn’t owned by a brand like Microsoft or Apple, but rather is an open-source system, which means it’s created to allow users to use and modify the system in any way they see fit, so you aren’t tied to Windows or iOS.
  • Computer reboot: When you have an older computer or laptop, new software updates are often not able to be downloaded, but the current versions don’t work. With Linux, you can reboot old computers and laptops by downloading a different operating system to help it run!
  • The Terminal: Want more control over your user-interface? Linux allows you to edit the entirety of the OS through the “terminal.”

What is Ubuntu OS?

Ubuntu is a Linux-based operating system first released in 2004. Over the course of it’s 15+ years in service, it has become a popular open-source OS due to its many versions of software packages. Every 6 months, a new version is released to continuously improve its features and security.

What does it include?

Just like all versions of Linux OS, Ubuntu allows users to browse the web, create and edit documents, access social media and news outlets, and more. Essentially anything you can do on Windows or Mac, Ubuntu can do!

Ubuntu comes pre-installed with dozens of essential applications including an office suite, web browsers, email and media apps, games, and more. Not enough? Head to the Ubuntu Software Center and quickly download virus-free applications right from the software itself. Ubuntu is vetted to excel in any school, work, or personal environment.

Who is it for?

Since the program is open source and licensed under General Public License (GNU), users can copy, change, develop, and even redistribute their own version of Ubuntu! If you’re interested in software development, Ubuntu is a great OS to work with to individualize your own operating system and user interface.

Plus: Ubuntu is fully translated into 50+ languages to heighten accessibility.

Is it secure?

Ubuntu prides itself on being one of the most secure Operating Systems on the market. The program has a built-in firewall and virus protection software, along with bi-annual updates and tech support.

Why Ubuntu?

Here’s the good stuff: Why Ubuntu is even better than the other versions of Linux. The user interface.

Ubuntu has more of a Mac OSX feel, thus creating a clean, clear, and user-friendly interface. In fact, Ubuntu was designed to support touchscreen and HD, with integrated light and dark themes. It’s also certified to work on a range of PC laptops, including those of Dell, Lenovo and HP.

What is a LIVE USB?

'

A live USB is a bootable usb drive that contains an operating system that can be used without being installed. Essentially, you can stick this usb into any computer/laptop that can boot from a usb drive and you'll be able to load this operating system without having to install anything.

Most Linux distributions give you the option to install the operating system on your hard drive if you'd like to, but it is not necessary.

Keep in mind that unless you install the OS, the USB will boot into a 'brand new' OS each time and none of your updates or settings will be saved. You can save files as long as you make sure to save it on a separate USB or hard drive.

This is useful in cases where you don't want to save any files/settings.

A good example is when you are using someone else's computer and you don't want to leave a trace.
